•The Carmathian (Qarmaṭī) rulers were a radical Isma'ili Shi'a movement that established control over parts of Syria, Iraq, and Eastern Arabia from around 886 to 1078 CE. Known for their social reforms and opposition to the Abbasid Caliphate, they famously sacked Mecca in 930 CE and created a unique, egalitarian society in their stronghold of al-Ahsa.
